With your small group, find four examples of suspense. Write the examples as direct quotes on your WIKI page. Add the page number.

With your small group, find four examples of foreshadowing. Write the examples as direct quotes on on your WIKI page. Add the page number.

In a well-written paragraph, explain why your group chose these examples based on the definitions of suspense and foreshadowing.

ASSIGNMENT DUE DATE: FRIDAY, DECEMBER 2.

Suspense: A feeling of uncertainty about what is going to happen; doubt
Foreshadowing: A sign or signal about what is going to happen

Four Examples of Suspense (Chapter 1&2):
1. No one really knows or has seen the owners of the island. "I haven't seen my employer yet." (page 19)
2. When the boat was drifting into the rocks. "Fred Narracott shut off the engine, they nosed their way gently into a little natural inlet between rocks." (page 27)
3. The owner of the island is using different ways and names when signing letters to get people to come. "...and his correspondent signed herself with a flourish his ever Constance Culmington." (page 2) "Yours sincerely, U.N-" (page 8) "I am empowered to hand you one hundred guineas in return for which you will travel to Sticklehaven, Devon." (page 6)
4. Vera Claythorne is curious at the appearance of Mrs. Rodgers. "...the pale ghostlike Mrs. Rodgers. An oddly assorted party." (page 30)

Four Examples of Foreshadowing
1. When the Vera Claythorne arrived in her room and saw the old nursery rhyme on the wall. "Over it, in a gleaming chromium frame, was a big square of parchment- a poem. She stood in front of the fireplace, and read it. It was the old nursery rhyme that she remembered from her childhood days. Ten little Indian boys went out to dine; One choked his little self and then there were nine....."
2. Fred Narracott, the boat driver, said that you can't land on Indian Island when there is wind. "Can't land on Indian Island when there's a southeasternly. Sometimes 'tis cut off for a week or more." (page 27)
3. When an old man told Mr. Blore that his day of judgement is soon. "The old man stood in the doorway. He raised a solemn hand and blinked his bleary eyes. 'Watch and pray,' he said. 'Watch and pray.' The day of judgement is very close at hand." (page 15)
4. "There's a wasp crawling up your arm. No-keep quite still." (page 20) "Six little Indian boys playing with a hive; a bumblebee stung one and then there were five." (page 31)

My group chose these examples because suspense says that it is a feeling about what is going to happen, and the examples mean just that. If no one has seen the owner who invited them to Indian Island, that right there is suspense. The owner used different names when inviting the guests to Indian Island, which shows that the guests are doubting who the owner is because they were all told different names. We chose to say that Vera Claythorne is skeptical at the appearance of Mrs. Rodgers because when Mrs. Rodgers came into the room, she had a ghostly appearance which left Vera wondering. Foreshadowing is a sign or signal about what is going to happen, which is why we chose these next examples. A main example of foreshadowing, in my opinion, is when Vera Claythorne arrived in her room and saw the nursery rhyme on the wall. It described how "Ten Little Indians" died, and there are ten guests on Indian Island, which might give a hint to something that is going to happen later on in the book. We also chose the part of when the old man told Mr. Blore that his day of judgement was very close at hand. That is probably a signal that Mr. Blore will be one of the first Indians to die. We chose the one where Fred Narracott, the boat driver, said that you couldn't land on Indian Island because of wind, and that it could be closed off for a week at a time. This could be an escape place if the guests ever needed to leave, but Fred said that it could be closed off which could be bad if the guests needed to find a way out later in the book. Lastly, we chose the excerpt from the "Ten Little Indian" poem because it tied up with another point earlier in the chapter. On page 20 they mentioned how Vera had a wasp on her arm, and then in the poem it said how an Indian boy was playing with a hive and a bumblebee stung him, and that could mean that Vera dies because of a sting later in the book. All these examples make you shiver and are scary, which is why we chose them for suspense and foreshadowing.
